GABRIELA HEARST - 2021 American Image Awards
DESIGNER of the Year
Congratulations to the inspiring Gabriela Hearst!
Gabriela was born in Uruguay to a 6th generation family of ranchers. She grew up on her family's 17,000 acre ranch surrounded by horses, cattle, and merino sheep. Fast forward to September 2019, for the Spring Summer 2020 runway show, she was the first brand to stage a carbon neutral fashion show.
She’s a CFDA Fashion Award Winner and somehow finds time to stay incredibly active in support of various philanthropic organizations, especially Save the Children.
To top it all off, she answered a couple of questions for us as we approach the June 21 gala where she will accept her AAFA American Image Awards Designer of the Year honor.
In September 2019, for the Spring Summer 2020 runway show, you were the first brand to stage a carbon neutral fashion show. What are you most proud of?
It was an interesting exercise because we were in the finishing stages of our store in London, which was built sustainably by Lord Norman Foster, and my thoughts at the time were about measuring impact. Then I realized we had never measured our shows, so how do we know the impact of a fashion show. We knew the impact from a commercial and marketing perspective, but we didn't know the impact from a carbon footprint standpoint. The idea of measuring was exciting because how can you lower something if you don't know what that number is. We didn’t realize we were the first to do this.
Spring is often a time of optimism - but the past two springs have felt a little bit different. What is one thing that helps you spring out of bed each morning?
My children's future and everyone's children's future are what drives me today. To make sure we figure out a way to do business that is low impact to our environment, that leaves our earth enough time to rehabilitate itself and come to health. That has respect for one another, as human beings, so we can work towards a connectivity and understanding. We are all interconnected.
We are so thrilled to welcome her to the virtual stage on June 21, to accept her award and to continue her support of initiatives by the CFDA Foundation, the charity beneficiary of the 2021 AAFA American Image Awards.
We hope you'll join us in celebrating this honor and a future of fashion that is sustainable, collaborative, and unified.
