The AAFA American Image Awards began in 1977 to honor those who have exemplified leadership, excellence, and outstanding achievement in all sectors of the apparel and footwear industry, including design, manufacturing, and retail. The gala has become a spectacular celebration of our industry’s finest leaders, companies, and vision, bringing together a unique cross-section of influencers to celebrate creativity while drawing attention to public policy impacts on fashion and design. 

New this year, the association has launched the Eco-Steward of the Year award to honor the industry’s movement to accelerate its eco-journey and fashion’s contribution to protect the future of our planet and its people. 2021 honors include Company of the Year, Retail Innovator of the Year, Designer of the Year, Fashion Maverick, and Eco-Steward of the Year. Over the years, AAFA's American Image Awards has adjusted to the time and tone of American fashion.

In 2015, AAFA invited word-renowned artist Ruben Toledo to create a new award statuette. Toledo’s creation, featuring six different metal finishes, showcases AAFA’s global mission and represents all facets of the industry.
